The useful distinction

Cloud Agents are Cursor's Agent in isolated VMs. They were Background Agents until Cursor 2.0 (29 October 2025). They require a paid Cursor plan.

Cursor's own usage rose from more than 30% of internal PRs (24 Feb 2026) to more than 60% (2 Sep 2026). That is Cursor using Cursor.

How it works

Unattended work against a connected GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, or Bitbucket repo.

Dedicated Firecracker microVM. Auto-runs terminal commands. Signed commits. Draft PR at handoff.

Environment quality is the official limiter. Cursor's docs: not setting up a development environment is like not giving your engineers a computer.

Taps out. Multi-repo long-running is unavailable. Move to Cloud drops dirty files.

What it costs

Teams already buying Cursor Pro ($20), Pro+ ($60), Ultra ($200), or Teams ($40 / $120 per user).

Cloud Agents are charged at API pricing for the selected model. A spend limit is required on first use.

Older help-center snippets listed $20 / $70 / $400 included API dollars. That table was not on the live usage page on 15 September 2026. Do not publish those figures as current.

Taps out. On-demand typically has to be on to start a run (staff forum).

Vendor usage claims

Context, not a benchmark you can rerun.

24 February 2026 Cursor blog: more than 30% of PRs Cursor merges are created by agents. CNBC the same day: roughly 35%. 2 September 2026 Cursor blog: more than 60% from cloud agents.

Made with Love (31 July 2025) found Background Agent PRs good enough to merge on small tasks, and weaker on larger ones.

Taps out. No fetched Verge or Wired Cloud Agent review as of this retrieval.
